Matthew Pruitt, PharmD
What inspired you enter the pharmacy profession?
I was inspired by the ability to not only give back but to be accessible to anyone that needed help understanding their complex medication regimen or triaging their medical condition. My mission entering the profession was to be an advocate for patients and to be a partner in their healthcare journey.
I believe my work with the first COVID-19 mass vaccination site in Arizona is one of the most fulfilling projects I have had the opportunity to help lead a team through and display how vital pharmacists are to the healthcare ecosystem. Additionally, my advocacy work to drive health equity along with helping mentor hundreds of student pharmacists and seeing them succeed and change the profession is high on the list.
Effort, attitude, and preparation are critical drivers that help me excel. It is important to clear your mind and simplify what you are focusing on. Stop thinking about the things you can’t control and focus on the things you can control. Be present in the moment, listen and be curious. I believe it is important to imagine what it would truly be like to swap places with someone, it allows us to not only better understand who they are, but we often uncover some of our own mistaken ideas.
Vision for Pharmacy
As we move into a value-based payment model there is no doubt in my mind that pharmacists will play a pivotal role in reducing healthcare costs and improving health outcomes by practicing at the top of their scope. It is critical that we have an innovative and open mind when envisioning what the future could be. That vision becomes reality when our focus is centered around the patient and understanding their individual needs.
